Update: Thriving Workplace Initiative

Dear University of Maryland faculty and staff,

I would like to provide you with an update on the Thriving Workplace Initiative, launched about a month ago.

The Gallup Organization, our partner in this project, has completed the first step of gathering information on our campus’ work environment via a confidential survey.

Gallup reports that the response rate was very high for this kind of survey: 54%, more than double the response in most workplaces.  (In some of our academic and administrative units, the participation rate exceeded 80%.) In total, 6,101 faculty and staff took the 10-minute survey. This includes regular and contingent staff as well as tenured and tenure-track, adjunct, professional, research and hourly faculty.

Over the next two months, Gallup will analyze the data to ascertain the levels of engagement and inclusion in the workplace across the entire campus: the highs, lows, and in-betweens. The results should be available to campus units by mid-July.  Then, the Center for Leadership & Organizational Change will work with campus units to help develop and implement action plans as needed. Throughout, your confidentiality will be maintained.

Thank you for helping to make the University of Maryland an even better place for everyone to work and thrive.

Sincerely,

Wallace D. Loh
President
