In 2008, the University of Maryland developed a comprehensive and bold 10-year strategic plan, “Transforming Maryland: Higher Expectations.” In the years since, we have experienced a remarkable rise in accomplishment and reputation. By any measure, our University is now one of the nation’s front-rank public research universities. New opportunities now promise even greater attainments, and we will continue on our path to be considered “equal to the best” among all universities in the world.

I am pleased to provide testimony to the General Assembly for our FY 2018 capital budget request. We greatly appreciate the General Assembly’s ongoing support of our capital requests, which is having a transformative impact on our campus and the state’s economy.

With strong, continuing support from the General Assembly and Governor Larry Hogan, the University of Maryland (UMD) turned 2015 into a year of record achievement. UMD’s students were the best ever and the most diverse. Graduation rates were the best ever and among the highest in the nation, including for underrepresented minorities.
