In 2008, the University of Maryland developed a comprehensive and bold 10-year strategic plan, “Transforming Maryland: Higher Expectations.” In the years since, we have experienced a remarkable rise in accomplishment and reputation. By any measure, our University is now one of the nation’s front-rank public research universities. New opportunities now promise even greater attainments, and we will continue on our path to be considered “equal to the best” among all universities in the world.

Reflection, Dialogue, and Action

Across our large and decentralized University, there are actions already underway, with more planned as described below. Yet no administrative office, or new initiative, will improve our campus climate without every member of our community playing a part. We all need to ask what we can do each day to stand for our values.

Capital Budget Testimony 2017

I am pleased to provide testimony to the General Assembly for our FY 2018 capital budget request. We greatly appreciate the General Assembly’s ongoing support of our capital requests, which is having a transformative impact on our campus and the state’s economy.

University of Maryland Strategic Partnership

On Oct. 1, the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership Act of 2016 became law in Maryland. This law builds on the tremendous success of MPowering the State, formalizing the partnership established in 2012 between the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the University of Maryland, College Park.

Decennial accreditation of UMD

April 6, 2017

Dear University of Maryland community,

This is the year of our mandatory decennial accreditation review by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSC). It focuses on the educational mission of the University.

Our last review was in 2007, on the eve of the Great Recession and the ensuing "new normal" (decreasing state funding and increasing tuition) that is reshaping American public higher education.
