With renewed hope on the horizon after a year of uncertainty for many, we are pleased to announce that more students than ever see their potential future at the University of Maryland. The university is on the cusp of receiving a record-breaking achievement of 50,000 applications for admission this year, and we are proud that this number also includes record-high applications from Black and Latinx students. This is a significant step forward in our efforts to increase the diversity of our student body. 

I want to thank the student leaders who spoke with Maryland administrators to learn more, ask tough questions, and express what this means to you. We count on members of our community to be advocates for others, and it is right to want to know as much as possible about whether we are treating people fairly. 

In 2018, Jordan McNair, a Maryland football player and kinesiology major, tragically passed away. He will never be forgotten. Today, I announce a new partnership with the Jordan McNair Foundation to continue to honor his life and legacy on our campus. 

It has been more than three and a half years since the life of First Lieutenant Richard W.Collins III was senselessly taken on our campus. As a community, we remain deeply affected by the tragic loss.

The University System of Maryland Board of Regents has approved our proposal to name our newest campus residence halls after four individuals who paved the way for the rich diversity and culture that defines our campus today.

As 2020 comes to a close, we reflect on a year like no other and celebrate the beauty and resilience in our world. On behalf of the entire University of Maryland family, we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.

Earlier today, Joseph Biden was announced as the 46th President of the United States. Though legal challenges remain, this announcement marks a path forward in the American presidency.

In one of my first official duties as President, I outlined five initiatives and recommendations designed to create a more inclusive environment at the University of Maryland. Those announcements were just the beginning of our commitment to build a multicultural campus of excellence. Today, I am pleased to build further upon that commitment.
