The past year was one of both extraordinary challenges and opportunities, and the University of Maryland showed resilience and fortitude in its continuing mission to educate a top workforce, innovate inside and outside the classroom, and produce groundbreaking research to improve our state and world.
As a member of our institution’s faculty for more than 25 years and its president since July, I have been honored to see how our entire campus—from research and academics to the arts and athletics—mobilized to address the risks presented by COVID-19, pivoting our operations to a virtual environment and dedicating ourselves to providing a high-quality learning experience, no matter the circumstance.
From residence hall custodians, food service workers and other staff, to our faculty, to our students and alums, every member of the Terp community deserves our admiration, thanks and appreciation.
While our country’s two pandemics of coronavirus and racial injustice will unfortunately continue into 2021, the state’s flagship university is well positioned to meet the grand challenges of our time, including discrimination, climate change and poverty.
During my tenure, the university will pursue new heights in excellence in all facets of our academic and co-curricular enterprise and the creation of an inclusive, multicultural campus environment. One cannot exist without the other.
Thank you for your continued support of the University of Maryland. I look forward to continuing the strong relationship between the institution and the General Assembly.
