Dear University of Maryland colleagues,
I write to share good news with our valued employees. Last night, Chancellor Perman announced proposed pay increases for most regular status faculty and staff employees of the University System of Maryland schools. The increases are part of the budget proposal recently announced by Governor Larry Hogan and have been made possible through education and advocacy spearheaded by our System and institution leadership. We have worked to demonstrate the priceless value of our higher education workforce and the talented faculty and staff who power our academic and research enterprise.
Along with others, I personally have worked to make clear the impact of merit pay to retaining the faculty and staff working each day to tackle the grand challenges we face, and I want to sincerely thank Governor Hogan and his administration for hearing and responding to this message. The General Assembly will consider the proposal in the months ahead. Chancellor Perman, my fellow presidents, and I feel that these enhancements are well deserved for our faculty and staff and recognize the efforts to support and advance the mission of our institution.
The salary increases come in the form of a one-time bonus of $1,500 and a 1% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) effective in January 2022. In July 2022, employees will receive an additional 3% COLA. In addition, in January and July, the proposal stipulates that the university will be granted a pool of funds to distribute merit increases to eligible employees.
Further information regarding the administration of these enhancements will be provided by University Human Resources.
