President Pines issued the following statement in response to Steny Hoyer's announcement that he is stepping down from his House leadership role:
Every Marylander has benefited from the esteemed leadership of House Majority Leader and UMD alum Steny Hoyer '63, who has represented the Fifth District of Maryland since 1981. As the state's flagship institution, we are proud when members of our Terrapin family choose to serve our state and community - ascending from our Student Government Association to the highest ranks of the U.S. Congress.
Mr. Hoyer's fearless role for nearly a decade as Leader truly made a mark on our state, from expanding voter access to championing early childhood education. I congratulate him on all of his accomplishments, and we are so grateful that Mr. Hoyer continues to advocate for Terrapins and Marylanders every day. I thank him for his leadership, mentorship and friendship.
