In the coming weeks, we will cross the one-year threshold since the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated remote instruction for the vast majority of our courses and telework for most of our operations. I want to thank all of you for your resilience and resolve during this challenging time. 

I want to thank the student leaders who spoke with Maryland administrators to learn more, ask tough questions, and express what this means to you. We count on members of our community to be advocates for others, and it is right to want to know as much as possible about whether we are treating people fairly. 

The University of Maryland achieved its highest ranking ever in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) survey. For the first time, the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore were linked together as one research enterprise in the ranking, with combined research expenditures of $1.1 billion. This expanded research effort earned us a ranking of No. 14 overall and No. 8 among public institutions.

In 2018, Jordan McNair, a Maryland football player and kinesiology major, tragically passed away. He will never be forgotten. Today, I announce a new partnership with the Jordan McNair Foundation to continue to honor his life and legacy on our campus. 

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Spring 2021 semester. 2020 was a difficult year and one that will never be forgotten. We had to learn new ways to connect when we couldn’t do so in person. But as a community, we prevailed. 

Earlier this week, Governor Hogan joined Virginia Governor Northam and DC Mayor Bowser in making a joint statement about the upcoming presidential inauguration of Joseph R. Biden Jr., the nation’s 46th president. I firmly believe this is the right message to send, as health and safety must be paramount in this historic moment.

It has been more than three and a half years since the life of First Lieutenant Richard W.Collins III was senselessly taken on our campus. As a community, we remain deeply affected by the tragic loss.

I am writing to inform you that after eight remarkable years of accomplishment and service, Senior Vice President and Provost Mary Ann Rankin has informed me of her decision to resign from her position as Provost at the University of Maryland as of January 29, 2021. As a community, we owe a significant debt of gratitude to Provost Rankin for her vision, leadership and commitment to academic excellence during a period of steady ascent for our institution.
