I am pleased to congratulate Team Maryland on the successful bid to bring the new, consolidated FBI headquarters to Prince George's County. This is a tremendous win for our state, our region and our university.
The University of Maryland is proud to be a part of this historic moment, and we are committed to partnering with the FBI to support its workforce. At the University of Maryland, we are eager to leverage our top-notch research capabilities and pipeline of talent in counterterrorism and cybersecurity to help set the FBI up for continued success.
Our graduate program in criminology ranks No. 1 in the country by U.S. News and World Report, and the FBI consistently recruits UMD graduates. UMD-led programs such as the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) further affirm our role in supporting the FBI's important work in exploring the causes and human consequences of terrorism in the United States and around the world. The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) based at the University of Maryland also serves as a strategic asset for research and development in artificial intelligence, information engineering and human systems.
The FBI's arrival in Prince George's County will create new opportunities for our students and faculty, and it will help to strengthen our region. Maryland's selection as the agency's new headquarters speaks volumes about our state's robust economy, commitment to education and innovation, and the vital role we play in our national security. Proximity to the university's growing Discovery District and possible connections with UMD initiatives like PROGRESS, a gun violence reduction community research project, make the timing of this announcement especially exciting.
