University of Maryland Receives its Highest Ranking in Research and Development Survey

The University of Maryland achieved its highest ranking ever in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) survey. For the first time, the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore were linked together as one research enterprise in the ranking, with combined research expenditures of $1.1 billion. This expanded research effort earned us a ranking of No. 14 overall and No. 8 among public institutions.

In 2018, Jordan McNair, a Maryland football player and kinesiology major, tragically passed away. He will never be forgotten. Today, I announce a new partnership with the Jordan McNair Foundation to continue to honor his life and legacy on our campus.

I am writing to inform you that after eight remarkable years of accomplishment and service, Senior Vice President and Provost Mary Ann Rankin has informed me of her decision to resign from her position as Provost at the University of Maryland as of January 29, 2021. As a community, we owe a significant debt of gratitude to Provost Rankin for her vision, leadership and commitment to academic excellence during a period of steady ascent for our institution.

President Pines Responds to Attack on the Capitol

Today, we saw violence, chaos, and dangerous disregard for the rule of law in our nation’s capital, less than 10 miles from our campus. I hope every member of our UMD community is safe.
