  • Partnering to end anti-Black racism

    Dear Terrapins,

    I write to you today to commend the leadership of Black student leaders who have agreed to partner with me and other university leaders to pursue an anti-racist agenda here at the University of Maryland. 

    On July 1, my first day as president, I announced two priorities for our campus. One, we will achieve excellence in everything we do -- research, teaching and learning, arts, and athletics. And two, we will create an inclusive, multicultural environment.

  • Urgent COVID-19 measures

    Dear University of Maryland Community,

    We write to you today amidst an alarming spike in COVID-19 cases in the State of Maryland and here in Prince George’s County. Yesterday, Governor Hogan announced a 53% increase in hospitalizations and a 52% increase in cases per 100,000 residents, clear indications that we are entering what he termed a coronavirus “danger zone.” We encourage you to read his full executive order.

  • Winter 2020 Commencement

    I am delighted to announce UMD’s Winter 2020 Commencement speaker: three-time Olympian and Olympic Gold Medalist Dominique Dawes ‘02. Dawes will deliver the university’s virtual commencement address on December 20, 2020.
  • The Historic 2020 Election

    Earlier today, Joseph Biden was announced as the 46th President of the United States. Though legal challenges remain, this announcement marks a path forward in the American presidency.
  • Thanksgiving Recess Update

    Given the increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases nationwide and here in Maryland, I am today announcing that courses will transition entirely to online instruction, with very few exceptions, following the Thanksgiving break.
  • Awaiting Results from Election 2020

    After what appears to be historic voter turnout nearing 150 million votes cast, including record levels of participation by young voters, we must all exhibit patience as it is determined who will serve as our next President.
