Statement on Congressman Hoyer’s Retirement
January 08, 2026
On behalf of the entire University of Maryland community, it is my honor to congratulate Congressman Steny Hoyer, a proud Terp and extraordinary Marylander, for his distinguished public service on the occasion of announcing his retirement at the end of this term. Our community has been so fortunate to be represented by someone who represents the best of Maryland.
For nearly six decades in the halls of Annapolis and Washington, D.C., Congressman Hoyer has been a leader in promoting the welfare of citizens across Prince George’s County, Maryland and the United States. His efforts in areas ranging from the expansion of children’s healthcare and the protection of the Chesapeake Bay to maintaining the strength of our national research enterprise have been transformational and a demonstration of the importance of building consensus in the public interest.
Congressman Hoyer often mentions that the inspiration for his service was attending a 1959 speech by then-U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy in Cole Field House, where Kennedy asked the crowd to become active in the local community and live up to their duty as Americans in a time of uncertainty.
We are deeply grateful to have been there for him at the beginning as he has been there for the University of Maryland in all the years since.
On behalf of every Terp, Congressman Hoyer, thank you.
