COVID-19 continues to impact every aspect of our personal, professional, and academic lives. It is within this context that we must make decisions about the spring 2021 academic calendar.
We write to share the latest update that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the university budget. While we are pleased to announce this cessation of temporary salary reductions, it is important to note that short-term budget challenges remain.
Dear University of Maryland Faculty and Staff, Today, I write to you with an update to the previously announced budget mitigation plans aimed at lessening the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our university. Upon a review of the temporary salary reduction portion of the mitigation measures, we are implementing a revision to exclude any portion of salary supported by sponsored awards.
Today, we write to you all to share the latest update that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the university budget. We want to assure you that our decisions are being guided by a commitment to sustain the excellence of our education, research and service missions, protect the health, safety and well-being of our campus community, and minimize the impact to the most vulnerable of our community.
Under the Governor's directive, all Maryland residents must now shelter at home, except to leave for "an essential job or for an essential reason, such as obtaining food or medicine ... or other necessary purpose." Over one-half of the states are under a similar order.
